Candle Wax Additives
Candle wax additives provide the candle maker with tools to tailor paraffin waxes. When you use wax additives you have the ability to soften, increase rigidity, melting point and fragrance retention of paraffin waxes. You also use them to eliminate surface imperfections, improve gloss and mould release of the candles. Wax additives with melt points over 180 degrees F should be melted separately with a small amount of wax and then added to the melted wax only when it is completely liquid.
Titanium dioxide wax additive: used for white dye in cut and carve candles.
Candle glaze: this is a clear plastic coating for Cut-N-Curl candles, novelties etc and has been used for years and years. Glossy surface finish. It’s tried and true.
Vybar: (low melting point Vybar #260 and high melting point Vybar #103) is used in place of stearin in moulded candles and it improves scent retention and colour.
Stearic acid: comes in triple pressed flakes and is used to harden wax and increase opacity.
Luster crystals: improves strength, colour and gloss while hardening the wax and improving burn time.
Ultra Voilet absorber: reduces fading.
Snowflake oil: is mottling oil for a sub-surface crystal effect.
Wax Consumption
The rate of wax consumption is influenced by the size and construction of the wick. A tighter braid will consume less fuel than a loose braid, even if they are of the same construction. Some candle wicks of the same cotton content will burn differently because they are braided differently.
Burn Rate: This is the amount of wax consumed in grams per hour by the wick. The higher the burn rate number the more wax will be consumed. Test burning is recommended and is the best way to get the most accurate results.
Wax Embellishments
Candle stickers and Wax Wraps are made from wax and burn down with the candle.
Method: Gently peel wax wrap from its backing. Rub a glue stick or hot wax on the back of the wrap so to give extra adhesion. Carefully place one end of the wrap on the candle where you want it to go. Press it in place for about 10 seconds, with your fingers. Carefully wrap around the candle until the ends meet. Press ends together for 10 seconds with your fingers. If the wrap is longer than the circumference of the candle, cut it with a knife or scissors, what is left can be used on another candle.
These add a touch of `art’ to the candle.
